3 Things I’ve Learnt from Starting a New Business
As most reading this will know I have recently had the opportunity to start a new business with the awesome Lawrence Everest and Abhi Lakhina. They were brave (or mad) enough to partner with me to launch Love Care Recruitment, an agency that recruits across the adult and childcare sector.
I have learnt so much over the last terrifying yet super exciting year, I thought I’d share the 3 things that have really stood out.
1. Things go wrong…
This happens, be prepared to not be prepared! You can have researched, analysed, planned, and thought of every outcome conceivable yet life will find a way to give you a slap! If you’re not ready to not know the answer or expect to come out on top on every situation, you have some pain ahead! You’ll be knocked down again and again. It was a real lightbulb moment when Lawrence recommended I read the book “the obstacle is the way”, which I fully recommend also!
This helped me process things when they went wrong, run towards to the problem and put my big boy pants on! I had to learn, very quickly, that not everything that goes wrong is a “whelp, that’s that then, I’m off to the job centre” moment!
2. Get people you trust on board and leverage
You can’t do everything yourself; you have to let go! Find people you trust, that share your vision and can take your business to the next step. I have been incredibly lucky to find two superstars in Steve and Kayleigh, who have made my life 10 times easier!
This also goes for looking up! Get a mentor or two, someone you can run ideas past, that give you true and honest feedback.
3. It’s so much fun
Although it's stressful, it's one hell of a ride. Knowing that every little decision you make will shape the future of the business is exhilarating. I won’t pretend I haven’t sat with a beer on Friday thinking “what the hell was I thinking” but I also wouldn’t change that feeling for the world because you also get the rush of truly believing in what you’re doing and your vision!
